"The [Inay(an)] System (of Eskrima) is Complete" ~ Mangisursuro Inay 1944-2000

2010 Memorial Workout

I find myself very fortunate to have had such a great teacher. My father, and teacher, had shared with me many insights as well as lessons for life. He used our family system, the Inayan System of Eskrima, as the vehicle for his lessons. 10 years after his passing, the Inayan Training Organization as a group continues this tradition. A tradition of self-development utilizing warrior ethics and training for adults and children.

This year we had the Memorial workout in the same yard that the Inayan Eskrima System was founded. The very same backyard where Great Grand Master Angel Cabales, Maha Guro Dan Inosanto, Grand Master Leo Giron and many other great eskrimadors have learned and taught. We worked on material that harkens back to the roots of Filipino Martial Arts, and also to the early days of the revitalization of FMA.

We had a chance to work in depth regarding both Inayan Serrada Eskrima as well as Inayan Kadena De Mano Eskrima. The real treat was the instructors present. All the Sursuro (Master) instructors were there to help with individual needs, receiving personal tweeks and pointers. The Inayan Guros were there to help with instruction as well as take photos and video of the instruction and training. Guro Levy actually followed some of the students and instructors around to get a more personal view of participating in this great workout.

The special guest was none other than Remi Estrella! Guro Estrella is one of the few people alive that learned from both GGM Cabales and GGM Sarmiento. For the majority of the workout, Manong Remi worked with the participants of the 2010 Mangisursuro Memorial Workout on the finer points of Serrada and Kadena De Mano while citing specific lessons and memories regarding the essence of these well renowned styles.

I am very thankful that one of my first teachers was available to come and share his personal insights with us. Uncle Remi has long resisted teaching to the open public, and after much encouragement from my sister, Sursuro Jena Inay he consented to teaching for the workout. Having Sursuro De Fanti, Sursuro Peterson there as well was as always a great privilege, both of whom I have called Uncle since I was a very small child. A big thanks goes out to Sursuro Inay for her help and encouragement for this year's memorial workout for our father.

This event was made a success by the large attendance! We had a great event due in large part by all the people that came from all over the Bay Area and also the San Joaquin Valley to support Mangisursuro Mike Inay's Inayan. Thank you all so much.

Keep Training
